After nearly two decades at Iowa State University, Dr. Gary Munkvold will step into a new leadership role as Chair of the Department of Plant
Pathology at the University of Kentucky, beginning May 1.
Munkvold has been a cornerstone of the Seed Technology and Business (STB) Graduate Program for 19 years, helping develop its interdisciplinary curriculum and seeing more than 100 graduates come and go in his time. The program, a collaboration between the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Ivy College of Business, has benefited significantly from his academic leadership and industry expertise.
In a message to students and colleagues, Munkvold reflected on the “tremendously rewarding” nature of his work with the STB program. He noted the dedication of students, many balancing work, family, and academic commitments, and expressed pride in their accomplishments. He also highlighted the strong collaboration between faculty across colleges in delivering coursework tailored to the needs of seed industry professionals.
Although departing ISU, Munkvold will retain affiliate faculty status, allowing him to continue advising students currently under his mentorship.
Iowa State University, the Seed Science Center, and the Graduate Program in Seed Technology and Business extend their sincere gratitude to Dr. Gary Munkvold for his many years of service, leadership, and dedication. His impact on students, faculty, and the seed industry will continue to be felt for years to come.
