What is required for admission to the program?
Students will be required to meet the following requirements
for admission to the program:
- Obtain a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a business, agronomy or a biology related discipline; and
- Graduate in the top quarter of your class (GPA of approximately 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale) This is a general guideline. If you have questions about your undergraduate GPA please contact us at email@example.com.
Potential students for the degree program are expected to have diverse backgrounds. Generally, students who have completed a 4-year degree from a college of agriculture, business or a seed-related area in biology will have the necessary course work to be successful. You should be an individual who has a passion for managing and leading organizations that will make improvements in the world’s rapidly changing seed sector. This degree program is aimed at professionals working in industry and government. Meeting the requirements mentioned above does not guarantee admission. You will go through the standard Iowa State University admission process. If you do not currently meet the requirements, please contact us for advice on how you can prepare yourself for the program.
Residence in Iowa or the United State is not a requirement for admission. International students will be considered individually, based upon consideration of the communication challenges that are associated with the student’s situation. For students whose native language is not English, a minimum score of 83 on the TOEFL exam (Internet-based) is required for admission. An English placement exam is required in the first semester unless you achieve 105 or more on the TOEFL exam.
All new admits to the online STB program must fill out an online graduate application ($60 for United States students and $100 for international students). You will need to fill out the online application and have all materials (with the exception of the essay and resume) submitted online. Directions for this are below.
Official records bear the original stamp or seal of the school registrar. Iowa State will not accept transcripts printed from a school’s website, nor grade reports. If you were previously enrolled at Iowa State you do not need to request your Iowa State transcripts; the Office of Admissions will obtain them directly.
Documents may be uploaded at the same time that you submit your online application, or at a later date if necessary. We can now accept a scanned copy of official academic records and degree statements issued by any institution where you earned (or will earn) a bachelor’s, and any institution attended after that (e.g., graduate work, etc.) for the admissions process. If you do not have an official copy of your transcripts you can still request them from the university/college and have them directly mailed to Iowa State University Graduate Admissions. If you are given an official offer of admission from Iowa State University to the program, you will then need to make sure an official copy is still sent directly to ISU admissions. They will accept scanned versions of official transcripts for the application process only.
Letters of Recommendation
We require three letters of recommendation from individuals who can attest to your potential for graduate study. Sources should be persons with substantial academic or professional contact with you such as professors or immediate supervisors. The letters should be submitted within the online application system if possible. If you run into issues getting your references to submit the letter electronically you can have them send it directly firstname.lastname@example.org.
You are required to submit a personal essay. The essay should be typed and limited to TWO pages in length. The essay will help us assess your goals, motivation, and your ability to communicate effectively in writing. Essay can be emailed to the STB program email@example.com. Please note that you will also be asked to submit a statement of purpose with your online application. These two writing pieces may contain similar information. We are looking for you to expand your thoughts a bit more within your personal essay.
What to include in your essay:
Discuss your academic and career goals. How will a Degree or Certificate from the Seed Technology and Business Program at Iowa State University help you reach these goals? What unique qualities and experiences would you bring to the program? What role would you like to play in the seed industry? In what way is this role complementary to your capabilities and personality? Is there any other information you believe is important to our assessment of your candidacy?
Include a copy of your professional resume. Your resume can be emailed to the STB program firstname.lastname@example.org.
